Snowflake Challenge 4: set some goals for the coming year

My mantra for 2020 is follow where the fic gods lead. I need to just kind of let go and write what I want, what feels good, meets my needs.

And a big part of that is signing up for a lot less challenges than I did in 2019. I did sooooo much writing for other people, kept myself to rigid plans, that it started to be less fun.

My goal this year is to make sure that I remember my hobby is supposed to first and foremost make me happy.

I'm Anarchycox!

So this is incredibly cheesy but it is something I tell my students, and my son, and something I utterly believe and I figure a good way to know me.

I believe that anytime we engage in a creative act, make something creative no matter the form it is an act of bravery and we make the world a better place with it.

I write fanfic, mostly Kingsman but will do some MCU/AoS, Bioware stuff, and kinda itching to try Knives Out fic.

I also crochet, spin yarn, sew, cross stitch, embroider, muck about with polymer clay, make jewelry.

I have a good life with incredible friends made through fandom, married to a stupidly awesome giant nerd professor, and we have a weird son and a weirder cat. These things sustain me since I live an hour past the middle of nowhere.

My username Anarchycox is because way back when my husband thought that would be a good roller derby girl name for me.

WIPS

Books and Hearts

50-60% done is my very loose guess, the deterioration and fixing of the relationship cannot be quick or it won’t be worth the happy ending they have.

Morton’s Marvelous Misadventures

70% done. My guess is four chapters left. Resolve the fucking cultists and continue the seeds for their future relationship. I can see a sequel spawning from this.

Bedded, Bound, and Bespoked

This one is hard to say, it depends how long I draw out the Merlin training? But I also think this one is 4-6 chapters left. Too drawn out and it will just feel repetitive.

Hearts Held Fast

Well, since it only has 1 chapter I hesitate to say it is more than 5% done, because I know what I have planned for this story, and it is not going to be a short one. World building like Dragon’s Breath, but historical and darker. Long fic, unsure fully how it will get to where I want it to.

A Promise is a Promise

The only reason it isn’t done is because I am sad to leave this universe. Also have lost my a/b/o mojo a bit - still like it, just not in the headspace for writing it. Determined to have it off the books by the end of the year.

Codename: Anticipation

I think about 40-50% done. In an existing universe, but really expands said universe, gives us more back story on characters, develops established relationships more, and creates new ones. I like where this is going but I tend to only work on it in spurts. Nothing for a month, then 6k in a night. This is a personal fic no deadlines or timelines, work on when that mood strikes. Bet it closes in around 30k.

Codename: Tenderness
This has been waiting for months and needs to be attended to. It is for a specific event and a specific person, and has gone through a couple ideas, but we have hit on a super soft get together complete au. This fic is as much about learning to accept yourself and that life seldom takes us where we expect, as it is about falling in love. This fic has an end of year deadline that much be met. My bet is about 40k.

I just finished a huge slow burn fic, and want a bit of a switch. A friend called it a flash burn fic. A story like in movies where people have that one magical day/night where they fall completely in love with a person. It starts with a very unique pairing but they are done with very quickly as the pairing I am interested in find their chance at happiness. No particular deadline, just something I want to write. One shot about 10k is my guess.

For an AU collection, I have a couple chapters done, and this is just going to be a sweet and bit silly fic. Not crack, more just side characters are going to be exasperating, bad guys will get what is coming to them. Whimsical, that is the word I am looking for. This is a whimsical fic. Secret gardens, bizarre magic, trials that are defeated in creative ways. My guess is about 25-30k, and it is due by the end of the year.

For a soft deadline free collection, with a bunch of writers writing their own fics, all based on one prompt. I keep wavering between a few different ideas, enough that I might end up doing a couple of them. My prime idea though is still calling to me. Rare pair, rare au. BAMF Queen of the Night, men loyal to her, supernatural wars. 20k, no deadlines.

On going universe, series of one shots that has had feels but generally been happy fish out of water stuff. I’m going to wreck it. No deadlines, no word count, this beast is going for years. Fucking Hasbro ;)

Home good.

Vacation was amazing, but fuck home is good.

Now we have to go away for two nights in two days because I need to go to edmonton for medical testing (nothing that serious), but that will be quick.

Our cat crazy missed us. We missed him.

Okay,

Approaching the end of the Kingsman Reverse Bang - I had a little more extension than most because I was already doing 3 stories, and pulled a fourth in a pinch hit necessity factor.

So writing with a deadline

2 KRB fics, one is 75% done, the other is about 15% started, want the first all posted by the 14th, the other by the end of the month.

Just Married is due July 28th - I have an incredible idea but I might have to change it just because it would take a while; this story is not started yet.

Pining is due August 10th - Still trying to get an idea focused for this one, and no writing started yet.

Kingsman Fairy Tales due by the end of the year - two chapters in, and already know there will be a prequel.

Fandom Trumps Hate - due I think by end of October. Haven't even thought about it much but the person who won me gave me a good prompt and once I start on this fic it will fly.

In my personal writing I have 4 wips that need tending to.

And there is a rumour of a group of us in October all writing a shortish fic based on one prompt just to see what different voices do with the same idea.

Oooh boy, having it all down is vaguely daunting.
Sometimes I swear I did that Masters in Literature just to be able to cope with fanfic deadlines.

Also I am on vacation from July 15-26th let's not forget that.

In a less than 24 hour period I had someone write me poetry based on my Demon Verse series, and someone leave an incredibly dickish comment on my regency merlahad fic.

I will never understand leaving asshole comments on fanfic. ever.

I have a thick skin and it just enraged me, but what if I was a new writer, or one who didn't respond with either rage or a shrug, you could kill it for the person. Telling someone "love the plot, shame about your writing" could ruin a writer forever.

Don't be that person.

I just wanted to take the opportunity to expand a little on my notes in my AO3 requests.

My Hard Do Not Wants are the same across all my requested fandoms.

Please no rape/non-con but dub con if it makes sense in narrative is fine. If you include sex (i am fine if you do or don’t), no hardcore bdsm, no scat or watersports, bloodplay, or daddy kink. No infidelity.

No student/teacher relationships, no major character death or sad ending. No fire as a plot device (ie burning down building).

For Mass Effect and Dragon Age no hard aus, canon, post canon, canon adjacent etc are preferred.

Things I like in all my requested fandoms:

Banter, and relationships between characters whether romantic or platonic. I love seeing characters interact with each other and how the relationships are similar or different. Snark and comebacks are always enjoyed.

I love really seeing the world, little attention to detail. Weather, location, what people are wearing and eating, these things make a story so real for me.

Any rating from G to E is welcome, and if you do write sex, I love humour and communication in sex scenes.

You can see by the variety of prompts there that I am very flexible in what I like in Kingsman. Anything from close to canon, to full au are fine by me. I particularly love Kingsman with a bit of sci-fi or fantasy bent or completely domestic/mundane. A big thing I am looking for in a Kingsman story with a very unexpected element the characters thrown together in circumstances and working through it. I love these characters being very protective over each other, and have a huge love for them being competent.

Pining. I love pining in Dragon Age fics so much, I just live for it. Enemies to Friends to Lovers is great here, and the super tough soldier being a big pile of goo for the person they love is always a treat. A big thing I love in Dragon Age is also courting customs or traditions being wildly different across thedas so a person doesn’t realize that they are being courted. “Idiots to lovers” and the companions all wanting to lock the people together until they kiss is so great.

In Mass Effect I like canon, but definitely am for it as long as it is the mass effect universe? I.e. you can skip the reaper war and just have aliens trying to cope together. Huge fan of fire fight flirtation especially if it drives the other teammates crazy. Grunt as Shep’s murder baby is a welcome thing especially if the love interest has to cope with it. Banter, and just complete dorks at love and courting is wonderful.

Ugh.

Got a call this morning, my husband's uncle's partner died unexpectedly in the night. Near as we can tell he was in around 60. No clue why yet, just that by the time the paramedics got there, there was nothing that could be done.

We expect the call about our grandparents who are left. They are over 90 and in failing health. We will be sad, but not surprised.

Unexpected grief is so difficult to process.

I am a very lucky fanfic writer. I am a decently sized fish in a small pond, and have a dedicated fanbase, that reread, kudos, and comment. To deny that would be a lie. I have fans, and loyal readers.

As ever with fanfic, some stories hit better than others, a handful of kudos vs a couple thousand. And at this point I can generally guess which will have a strong response, which won't. And as 85% of the time I am writing for myself I am okay with however it shakes out.

I knew my Kingsman Demon Verse series would be well received.

But I didn't know how well.

I cannot believe the wonderful response this absurd series is getting, and I am so very appreciative. The kudos, the effusive comments, are really reminding me how lucky a writer I am.

I saw endgame with my mom, who was doing her annual visit because the good dr. cox had to go to a conference in Ireland. She and I have watched comic book movies together my whole life - we saw the bloody george clooney batman in the theatre together.

So seeing endgame with her made me incredibly happy.

We enjoyed, and god the three hours went quick.

Great character moments and a few scenes that made me squeal.

But good lord the plot was just a dumpster fire with a few things that truly and thoroughly pissed me off.

My mom is visiting for a couple weeks and it is so great. Husband is off to a conference this week and she came in because the company while he is away is very welcome. I could handle 5 days alone with my kid, but it is nice to have the support in the house, because my husband is a super hands on dad and the beastie will be feeling the lack.
