Ugh.

Got a call this morning, my husband's uncle's partner died unexpectedly in the night. Near as we can tell he was in around 60. No clue why yet, just that by the time the paramedics got there, there was nothing that could be done.

We expect the call about our grandparents who are left. They are over 90 and in failing health. We will be sad, but not surprised.

Unexpected grief is so difficult to process.

My mom is visiting for a couple weeks and it is so great. Husband is off to a conference this week and she came in because the company while he is away is very welcome. I could handle 5 days alone with my kid, but it is nice to have the support in the house, because my husband is a super hands on dad and the beastie will be feeling the lack.

The five year old got invited to a party where parents can elect to stay or just drop the kid off. I asked the five year old if he was fine with being dropped off and his response was, "Mommy it's a dance birthday party. I can shake my booty without you." So we are going to drop him off.

This earned me "oh I could never do that. Unless they've had play dates?" and "We don't even know the mother."

It is a 2 hour party for a classmate. He is fine with the idea of being dropped off, he only wouldn't be fine if we made it a thing. And to quote my husband the good dr cox, "if they did anything I'd kill them, and it is technically hard to convict me in this town I'm friends with the crown attorney and judges."

The five year old likes being independent. This is a safe way to let him be independent. I love being a parent just about more than anything, but jesus fucking christ I hate how I am supposed to perform parenting sometimes.

We have no family in town, they are 4000 kilometers away. The good dr cox and I got time as a couple maybe half a dozen times in the year and that is a generous number, so yeah other moms I am putting for two hours my marriage ahead of my child's 'safety' when I know he is going to be fine.

People, they suck.

Well I learned we live far enough north that the public school system never shuts for the cold. Only if power or water are out will a school shut due to cold.
-52 with the windchill when I dropped the kid off. His class has 25 students. There were 7 there at drop off.

I believe I have mentioned my slightly idiotic cat.

 Day 1

Talk about your Happy Place - things that give you joy, keep you calm or sane

Creation

My happy place is really two things hanging with my guys (husband, 5 year old, and our idiot cat). That makes me happy and fills my belief that the world fundamentally is a good place.

But my other happy place the one that offers personal fulfillment is in creation. I don't believe that idle hands are the devil's playthings, but...I like my hands to be busy. And that means a lot of crafting - crocheting, sewing, cross stich, polymer clay bead, spinning yarn, and embroidery. And it also means writing. Our son knows and thinks this is natural that parents need creative time to feel good about themselves. That when Mommy and Daddy are being creative it is their time, and he has creative time too.

I write as much as time allows, and I write fanfic. I love fandom but not really for fandom itself but for the people I meet and the stories we tell. My happy place is worldbuilding, twisting characters we know and love into insane and different circumstances but keeping them who they are. And I love bringing outside OCs into worlds to watch these characters and show their strengths and weaknesses and have people utterly believe the OC could fit in this space. It is the best sandbox ever.

Start: January 2019

End: December 2019

Goal: 52 one shots

Guidelines:

Each one shot is not to exceed 5,000 words

There is a wiggle allowance of 1% on word count

They are not connected to any previously created universe

One story a month can be added to a list to possibly be expanded later

One story every two months can receive one companion/sequel prompt

There is no set post date. Just in the period of Monday-Sunday once a week a story must appear

Prompts are from a list I have. A random number generator will pick the prompt

Each week I can reroll the number twice if what comes up doesn’t work for me

If I successfully complete 11 of 12 months following the rules come January 2020 I can do whatever I want with anything written

****************************************
so I created this challenge for myself because I am notorious for saying something is going to be a brief one shot and then it turns into a giant fic. I don't want to always write 40-60k fics with five different stories. I want to hone my skills at creating small and complete worlds and this is pretty low stakes. It says a max of 5k which means it could be as few as 500 words. I am hoping that this will create really interesting and different takes than my writing often does.

Woot!

I just submitted my grades for my first class teaching at the college I work at. It was such a weird feeling and sadness that my first semester is over, dear god the relief that it is over, and just wow, I did it. Back to work after ten years, and all in all I did a solid job at it.

As soon as marking is done and grades are submitted, I'm going to figure out how to well use this place
